Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards
The Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards recognise government school teachers, teacher leaders, support staff and principals who have made a significant contribution to quality student learning in the Territory. Winners of the awards receive recognition for their contribution to delivering high quality teaching and education services.
Nominations open for the NT DECS Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards on Monday 27 May 2013 and close Tuesday 6 August 2013.
Categories
Categories for the 2013 Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards are as follows:
- Northern Territory Primary Teacher of the Year
- Northern Territory Secondary Teacher of the Year
- Northern Territory Early Childhood Teacher of the Year
- Northern Territory Primary Principal of the Year
- Northern Territory Secondary Principal of the Year
- Northern Territory Award for the Excellence in Teaching or Leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
- Northern Territory Support Staff Member of the Year

Selection process
Nominations are open to all Northern Territory Government employees. Each school may endorse one nomination per category.
Regional selection panel will select one finalist per category. The NT selection panel will review the finalists for each region and select one NT winner per category.
The Regional selection panel includes:
- Regional DSP
- a Principal
- a union representative (if available).
The NT selection panel includes:
- Executive Directors for each Directorate
- Senior Director –Centre for School Leadership, Learning and Development
- President – ANSTEL
- President or representative AEUNT.
Nominees will be assessed against AITSL National Professional Standard/s for Teachers or Principals.

On Friday 26 October 2012 an awards ceremony was held in each region.
The Darwin, Palmerston and Rural Regions shared a combined ceremony held at Parliament House with the Hon Terry Mills MLA, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory presenting the certificates.
The Hon Robyn Lambley MLA, then Minister for Education, presented the awards for the Alice Springs Region at the Alice Springs Golf Club.
Other regions included Tennant Creek (Barkly Region), Katherine and Gove (Arnhem Region).
Over 400 people from schools across the Northern Territory attended these ceremonies.
