Youth participation information for parents and guardians
Parents/guardians must note these changes impact on the way their child participates in education, training and employment.
Penalties under the Education Act may apply for failure to comply with these requirements and parents, guardians, employers and young people must therefore ensure that they are aware of and comply with these requirements.
For example, employers must not employ a young person until they have completed year 10. There is an exception for part time or casual work while a young person is still enrolled at school, provided that the employment is not during hours when the young person is required to attend school and is not at a time when it could affect his/her capacity to perform their school work.
Notification of Arrangements Form (word 77 kb)
The Notification of Arrangements form requires:
- Signature of the parents or guardians;
- The employer/trainer to fill out their details and the hours engaged per week. Trainers will only have to indicate the hours if the training is not full time.
- Return of the Notification of Arrangements Form to the school the child is enrolled or has previously been enrolled for administration. If your child has not been enrolled in a Northern Territory School you need to send their form to:
Participation and Pathways Division
Department of Education and Training
GPO Box 4821, Darwin, NT 0801
t: (08) 8944 9363
f: (08) 8999 4399
e: learnorearn.det@nt.gov.au
Your child needs all of these details before they can leave full time education.
Please note: It is the parent's/guardians responsibility to get all required details and signatures on the form and to return it to the school, or the Division. When the completed Notification of Arrangements Form is returned to the school, the school will send the form to the Participation and Pathways Division, Department of Education and Training, who will confirm the arrangements in writing with you and the employer/trainer.
If your child changes his/her arrangements
If your child changes his/her arrangements, e.g. if your child leaves his/her employer or changes the type or place of training or employment or changes training from full time to part time or visa versa, you must notify and send in a new Notification of Arrangements Form (word 77 kb)
There are penalties for non compliance with youth participation laws; that is if your child does not participate in education, work, training or a combination of the three until s/he is 17 years old.
