Mini budget 04 Dec 2012
The NT Government has announced a mini budget to achieve financial sustainability for the Territory. The Department of Education and Children’s Services has identified savings and efficiencies while maintaining frontline school services and addressing student outcomes. The reforms include a review of the Education Act, a restructure of corporate support and school support networks, a reassessment of grant allocations and the provision for executive staff to return to frontline duties. The mini budget also provided an increase in the Back to School payment scheme from $75 to $150 from the start of the 2013 school year and a pathway forward through the Teacher and Educators Enterprise Agreement for payment of remote retention bonuses to teachers serving in remote schools. A range of programs deemed to be inefficient or not achieving required outcomes have been reviewed as part of the Mini Budget process. Many of the savings strategies will require further consultation with staff, key stakeholders and unions around how they are best delivered and introduced. This will take place over the coming weeks and months. Read the Minister’s media release Establishing a quality efficient education model on the NT Government’s Newsroom website for more information.
