The Northern Territory Board of Studies (NTBOS) develops and provides high quality curriculum, assessment, reporting and certification to students in the Northern Territory from Preschool to Year 12.

Student achievement in the senior secondary years is recognised through a comprehensive framework of certification that aims to ensure that every young person leaves school with appropriate documentation.

The Board's focus includes Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) year 11 and 12 outcomes, and the Northern Territory Curriculum and Assessment framework, as well as middle years, early childhood, Indigenous education, and awards and scholarships.

Consultation: NTBOS Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Transition to Year 9 – Policy and Guidelines

The Northern Territory Board of Studies (NTBOS) is currently reviewing its policies to support schools with the transition to the Australian Curriculum. The NTBOS has produced draft Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Transition to Year 9 Policy and Guidelines which set out clearly the curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements of schools.
Survey questions have been designed to gather feedback from principals, teachers and other stakeholders on these documents. You will need to read the draft policy and guidelines prior to responding to the survey. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and will be open until COB Friday 21 June 2013.

National Assessment Program

Student achievement in the early years through to middle years of schooling is assessed by classroom teachers and reported against the Northern Territory Curriculum Standards described in the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework. The National Assessment Program measures and monitors student achievement against national and international standards.

It includes:

• National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
• three-yearly NAP Sample Assessments
• in Science Literacy, Civics and Citizenship, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy
• international sample assessments such as PISA and TIMSS.

The 2012 NAPLAN National Report has been released. This report provides detailed information on the achievement of Australian students on national literacy and numeracy tests.

More about NTBOS

The operational business of the Board is carried out by the relevant operational sections of the Department of Education and Children's Services. The Board is made up of 16 members representing parents, employers, principals, teachers, post-school educators, unions, government and non-government schools sectors and the Indigenous community.

The Board promotes a common curriculum for the compulsory years of schooling which is designed to provide a challenging level of education for all learners, whatever their aspirations and abilities; and to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to learn in recognised areas.

In the pursuit of equity, the Board fosters the fullest participation in education of groups and individuals for whom participation may involve special problems. Student achievement is recognised through an inclusive framework of certification that aims to ensure every young person leaves school with appropriate documentation.

The Board meets approximately four times per year.

The Board has the following functions:

• Provides advice to the Minister for Education and the Chief Executive of the Department of Education and Children's Services on curriculum policy in relation to:
• Establishes and maintains curriculum frameworks that encompass the needs of all students in the Territory school education system
• Establishes and maintains procedures for student assessment, reporting and certification
• Monitors, evaluates and reports on student performances
• Improves student outcomes
• Government policy that impacts on the Board's functions
• Cooperates and consults with prescribed authorities or bodies engaged in education and related matters.
